Expanding Proven Resilience Assessment
Over the past decade, the Predictive 6 Factor Resilience Scale (PR6) has evolved from a concise 16-item questionnaire into a comprehensive framework for understanding and strengthening resilience. What began as a groundbreaking model defining the Six Domains of Resilience has steadily expanded through extensive research, longitudinal studies, and practical application across diverse settings, driving development in mental health and wellbeing.
Each stage of development has added greater depth, from the introduction of signature resilience skills and the PR6-50, to the integration of exposome research and the launch of major training programs like Resilience First Aid (RFA) and High Adversity Resilience Training (HART). This journey has now culminated in the launch of the PR6E – an extended, detailed assessment that provides unparalleled insight into 24 essential life skills and predictive indicators of resilience, setting a new standard for personal and organisational
2015 to 2016 – Launch of the original PR6 Assessment
Many years of research into resilience and mental fitness culminated with the original development of the Predictive 6 Factor Resilience Scale (PR6). The original PR6 is a 16-item questionnaire, considering resilience over the last two weeks.
It is here where we defined the Six Domains of Resilience:
- Vision – Sense of purpose and working towards clear goals, and congruence
- Composure – Stress management, emotion regulation, ability to stay calm and in control, mindfulness
- Reasoning – Anticipating challenges, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills
- Tenacity – Persistence and strong motivation, realistic optimism
- Collaboration – Strong support networks and connection, communication skills
- Health – Quality sleep, healthy nutrition, regular exercise, personal health views and attitudes
The Health domain particularly was a new addition, given that other resilience models at the time considered only mental aspects. Given the growing research about how physical health supports mental health, this addition provided a comprehensive understanding of resilience.
The PR6 also introduced a forward-looking element – Momentum. This considers approach and avoidance motivation schemas, giving an insight into potential future movement given our willingness to engage with life.
Signature Resilience Skills
Beyond assessment of the resilience domains, in 2016 we also launched a comprehensive set of signature resilience skills for each domain. These provide a practical pathway to develop resilience capacity. The Certified Resilience Coach (CReC) program included these as skills to teach, while the Driven Resilience App developed these skills through daily microtask training.
Vision Skills
- Alignment with our basic needs as humans
- Set a resilient sense of purpose
- Develop meaningful goals
- Prioritise goals for action
Composure Skills
- Emotional awareness
- Emotion regulation skills
- Shifting perspective through reappraisal
- Mindfulness techniques to be present
Reasoning Skills
- Planning and preparation through visualisation
- Developing ingenuity through resourcefulness
- Building insight to explore beliefs
- Enabling agility to embrace change
Tenacity Skills
- Maintaining and regaining motivation
- Developing a realistic sense of optimism
- Growth through overcoming mistakes
- Persistence with effective time management
Collaboration Skills
- Perceptions and development of support networks
- Connection through effective communication skills

- Investing in consistent healthy nutrition
2017 – Development of the PR6-50
Later in 2016 and through to 2017, a 50-item version of the PR6 was developed and published. This provided a slightly higher level of accuracy than the 16-item PR6, alongside deeper domain-level assessment. The PR6-50 achieved a high level of internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.94.
Through this research we revised the questions included in the standard PR6, increasing its overall internal consistency to 0.84. Overall, the increase in accuracy going from 16 items to 50 items amounted to only a few percentage points, so generally the 16-item version continued to mainly be used for the majority of assessments.
However, the expanded questions and depth of the PR6-50 provided the groundwork for what would later become the PR6E.
2018 – Researching the Exposome in Mental Health
Being able to understand human resilience more broadly led to an investigation into a new concept that explored all exposures humans have in life – the exposome. Through the exposome we can consider a broader set of factors that influence our experience of life.
These include exposures that we’ve had in the past, ongoing exposures we have in our lives, as well as factors we can modify and develop, such as resilience skills. This included our original 2018 Circos diagram to represent the broader exposome model.
This research laid the foundations for what would later become the Relational Adaptive Resilience Exposome (RARE) model – an ongoing project to expand our understanding of mental health and predicting intervention effectiveness with higher accuracy.
2019 – Driven Skills Longitudinal Research
Using the PR6 as a pre and post assessment system, the impact of the app to deliver the signature resilience skills was measured. Here we found a 25% improvement in resilience over 6 months for people using the app at the recommended daily level.
This also helped to further validate the PR6 as a psychometric to re-assess resilience, as well as solidify the re-test reliability for those who did not participate in skills development, acting as a control group.
2020 – Expanding the PR6 on the Driven App
Astute Driven app users noticed that in 2020 we added in sub-domains for the six resilience domains. These sub-domains reflect the individual skills in each of the resilience domains, providing a deeper insight into personal resilience levels and progress with learning skills.
This provided a testing ground for the development of the extended PR6. During this time we refined a model to visualise flexibly not only the PR6 domains, but also a broad range of assessments in an easy-to-read chart that can summarise a large number of factors that influence human wellness.
During this time we started expanding the assessments and content of the Driven app, including a range of assessments on financial resilience, Big 5 personality assessment, and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS). This greatly expanded the level of insight to be able to investigate how to effectively support and protect mental health.
2021 – RARE Factor & White Paper
In 2021 we released a white paper documenting the Relational Adaptive Resilience Exposome (RARE) model as a foundation for future research on resilience and mental health prevention.
This included launching the RARE Factor – a mental fitness factor that measures consistency in daily resilience investment. Similar to how physical fitness requires consistency over time, the RARE Factor promotes and measures ongoing resilience skill development.
2021 also saw the launch of the High Adversity Resilience Training (HART) program, as well as Resilience First Aid (RFA) later in the year. This brought new assessments to further enable deeper analysis into the broader RARE model alongside the PR6 skills.
2022 to 2024 – Analysis & Investigation
Over the years we learned more about what helps support and protect mental health. This resulted in the release of the 2024 PR6 & Big5 research paper being published – one of the most comprehensive studies on how various personality factors and sub-factors relate to resilience development.
This research enables Certified Resilience Coaches to more accurately assist clients with specific personal development goals, using PR6 domains as domains that can be developed through skill practice.
2025 – PR6E Extended Assessment Launch
Following broad program uplifts for Resilience First Aid (RFA) and the Certified Resilience Coach (CReC), as well as new AI-driven coaching tools, we finalised the development of our new variable visualisation system for our assessments.
Along with this, the extended PR6 assessment was finalised, built on the skills assessments of the PR6-50 back in 2020 and before. The extended PR6 connects seamlessly to the 24 skills developed through the PR6 development program, measuring progress across each skill to enable deep insight into the enablers of resilience.
The New PR6E Assessment
The PR6E (Predictive 6 Factor Resilience Scale – Extended) is an advanced assessment providing a comprehensive and personalized map of an individual’s resilience. It is built upon the well-established and scientifically validated PR6 model, which has been utilized in university studies globally.
The key features of the PR6E include:
- 6 Validated Domains – It measures the core tenets of resilience: Vision, Composure, Reasoning, Health, Tenacity, and Collaboration
- 24 Essential Life Skills – Each of the six domains is broken down into four distinct and coachable skills, totalling 24 crucial life skills
- 4 Predictive Indicators – Momentum assesses four predictive factors – Approach, Initiative, Challenge, and Trajectory – to understand a person’s future resilience direction
Upon completion, individuals receive a detailed, visually engaging 18-page report. This report provides scores for all domains and skills, plain-language interpretations, and actionable guidance for development. For organisations, aggregated team reports are available to identify group strengths and areas for improvement.
