Driven Coach Spotlight: Anton Guinea

“Everyone should do this training” - How Anton Guinea Took Driven to the Coal Industry

When he was 21, Anton suffered a near fatal accident at work as an electrician – changing the trajectory of his life. From then on, he was instilled with a passion for workplace safety, and has developed multiple tools, research, and projects to help businesses upgrade their safety culture in Australia and globally. Anton was able to use his experience to develop a safety program, based in psychology, which has been used to transform leaders and organisations all over the world.

In 2005, Anton went on to establish The Guinea Group, a company dedicated to being a safety support network for businesses. With a strong focus on leaders, believing that the power to make workplaces safe lies with the leaders, especially in leading a culture of feeling safe to speak up about problems. In 2018, Anton came on board as a Resilience Coach to bring validated resilience tools into his practice.

The Challenge

Recently, Anton Guinea and his team provided leadership and safety leadership training and coaching to a client in the coal industry, who had just engaged a group of indigenous employees. This client understood the value of resilience training and put particular importance on the need to provide practical training in resilience, so that those skills can be learnt and developed. This was prioritised as a tool of prevention, with emphasis on learning these skills before they are actually needed.

The Approach

The Guinea Group utilised Driven’s app and the Driven Resilience Coaching program, which Anton reported was “a winner” and “an invaluable tool” to help people advance despite adversity.

Anton described how the program unfolded:

“The trainees were provided with their Resilience Report, and for two days, we unpacked what that meant for each of them. We used six sessions over two days to unpack each of the 6 factors, and we helped the trainees develop an action plan around their report, in a way that helped them create a resilient mindset. A mindset that will set them up for success during their traineeship. And of course, we had some team building activities, to add some fun to the program!”

This type of program relates to Anton’s core values of teamwork and actionable steps, paired with effective psychological assessments. In this instance, Anton used Driven’s Predictive 6-Factor Resilience (PR6) Scale to help people understand their own personal resilience level.

The Impact

“And, the feedback was amazing. Everything from ‘everyone should do this training’ to ‘I wish my partner could do this training’ and ‘this training will help me in life, not just at work’.”

Anton and The Guinea Group are very aware that every second day in Australia, someone passes away from a workplace related incident. He got lucky – and he has worked for fifteen years to make sure that others won’t need luck. We as the Driven Team are grateful to help enable Anton to do this fantastic work. And the feeling is mutual – Anton left us with this statement:

“We are so happy to be part of the resilience building effort and work that Driven are doing, and we love using the material, the reports and sending our trainees away with tools, and an action plan for their resilience success!”

In the future, Anton aims to help eliminate workplace accidents in Australia, and make workplace safety truly safe.
