Resilience First Aid Refresh Certification

RFA Refresh

Excited to announce the launch of our 1-day Resilience First Aid (RFA) Refresh training, designed for those already certified in RFA to extend their certification for another 3 years. Resilience First Aid is all about prevention – it shows us how we can build skills proactively to prevent mental health challenges, build a supportive environment, and prevent risk through an accredited proven program. The RFA Refresh course is part of our commitment to continually advance the art and science of mental health prevention.

The skills learned through RFA are extremely valuable on two fronts:

  • Peer Support – RFA teaches people how to create a supportive environment that builds resilience in others, practical conversational skills to talk proactively, and how to spot risk earlier and how to support
  • Personal Resilience – RFA also teaches personal sustainability skills, building personal resilience capacity and self-management strategies that enabled lasting wellbeing and protects mental health

This dual purpose makes it highly useful for people in all walks of life, as it helps us bring people, communities, and workplaces together, while also supporting the personal mental health of those completing the training.

RFA is also accredited as a suicide prevention program, though the key aim here is in primary prevention – how we can act earlier to prevent people from even considering going down that path? Of course, being able to act in the moment of crisis for someone is important, but if we can build a supportive environment where people never get to that point in the first place, that is so much better!

At the heart of RFA is the Predictive 6 Factor Resilience Model – the PR6. This is a comprehensive model of resilience that covers critical life skills across 6 mind-body domains:

  • Vision – Our sense of purpose and meaning in life, goals and priorities
  • Composure – Emotion regulation and stress management skills
  • Reasoning – Resourcefulness, adaptability, and planning for different outcomes
  • Tenacity – Persistence, optimism, and ability to overcome mistakes
  • Collaboration – Support networks, communication skills, learning from others
  • Health – Goals, healthy nutrition, regular exercise, and quality sleep

RFA expands on the skills taught as part of the PR6 model and show how we can all recognise those doing well in these areas, and when someone can benefit from support.

It includes how we can talk about these in a real-world way, building meaningful peer support skills that go beyond formal settings. These are conversations we have with friends, family, colleagues, and many others. RFA shows how we can enrich these to bring people closer together and protect mental health.

Measurable Impact

Our ongoing research finds that 9 out of 10 people can benefit from increasing their resilience skills, which help protect against mental health challenges like depression and anxiety. Rather than waiting until people need professional treatment, Resilience First Aid teaches strength-based skills to build resilience in others and supports proactive, early intervention.

The RFA program takes a preventative approach by placing trained mental health champions in communities to boost resilience and improve mental health outcomes. The Refresh course also enhances suicide prevention skills by up to 33% within four weeks, ensuring RFA-trained individuals are fully equipped to respond effectively to mental health challenges.

I’m happy to say that RFA is rated highly by participants, with 97% describing it as “Very Good” or “Excellent” and 92% reporting significant improvements in their resilience skills after completing the course.
